Medical Costs and the shift to high deductible plansBy: Rob Lynn Total Team Solution’s large group medical plan provided to our PEO Clients has had another successful renewal with the last four years averaging just 2.25% increase in premium expense per year. This is well below the average annual employee benefit increase for employer plans as the expected increase for benefit plans will be 4.1% in 2017, per Mercer, a leading benefit consultant group. For Total Team Solutions, the smaller than average premium increase for 2017 with no anticipated plan design changes is because medical costs for the plan have not grown significantly, year over year. Over the past few years, the increasing enrollment to high deductible plans with a healthcare savings account has shifted more cost to the consumer which has impacted behavior. Hopefully, enrollees are focusing on a healthier lifestyle and just not pushing medical treatments down the road where the medical condition could worsen and become more expensive to manage. Proactive preventive medical treatments, eating balanced meals with a bunch of fruit & vegetables, exercising, socializing and laughing are the well-worn pathways to less visits to the doctors and a happier life.
